So, tumblr support refuse to warn, censor or remove blogs that promote eating disorders—“pro ana” blogs—on the grounds of being harmful and trivialising a mental illness because they believe in “freedom of speech”. To them, “freedom of speech” means that blogs can post purging tips, tips on self-starvation, tips on hiding weight loss and generally encourage unhealthy lifestyles and the cultivation of a mental disease that kills millions of suffering men and women each year. Many people, including myself, have written to tumblr support asking why these blogs continue to exist. They do not answer our emails.
Nobody should ever “try” to get an eating disorder. Eating disorders are not glamorous, fun, diets, choices or icons. Eating disorders do not necessarily make you thin. They do not make you pretty, or popular, or stylish, or confident, or worthy of attention. They just make you unhappy, depressed and suicidal.
So, please reblog this. I want to see if I can get enough notes for people to become aware of this problem. Anorexia and bulimia are diseases. They kill. They are not “lifestyle choices” or diets. Pro-ana blogs encourage hateful behaviour towards oneself and reinforce negative thoughts about body image.
Livejournal, Xanga and Wetpaint all took a stand against pro-ana blogs, and shut down the worst offenders. Tumblr: don’t be spineless. Save millions of girls from a lifetime of hell.
If you agree with anything I’ve said, or watched the video and liked it, please reblog this. Please. This is our chance to get heard.
